主な研究領域

*化学物質への周産期曝露の発達神経毒性:
主として低濃度の重金属(メチル水銀,カドミウム,砒素)を対象としている
*化学物質毒性の修飾因子:
特に必須微量元素(セレン)あるいは低栄養などの栄養学的要因,遺伝的要因,性・加齢など生理的要因
*砒素汚染と健康影響:バングラデシュ・ネパール
*小児環境保健:インドネシア
*生業活動と化学物質汚染との相互関連性:インドネシアなど

ひとこと

人類生態学という言葉が使われたのはそれほど最近のことではないが,例えば生理学や公衆衛生学のように, 領域名を述べただけで誰にでも(正しいかどうかはさておき)理解してもらえるような学問でないのも事実です. 地球が相対的に狭くなり,人類の住処のboundary が学問的にも社会的にも十分に認識されるようになってくると, ひとつの地域・ひとつの問題をとりあげているつもりで,その背後に実にさまざまなほかの地域・ほかの問題が ぞろぞろとついてくるようなこと,あるいはひとつの地域と思った空間・集団の中でも問題の程度や性質が 均一でないようなことが増えてくるように思われます.そういった,要因と要因が影響しあい,ストレートな因果関係で 記述しにくい問題,あるいは集団の平均値よりも集団の中の偏差とその原因を重視するような問題は, 人類生態学がこれまで手がけてきた地域生態系の構造解明という課題にも共通しており, そうした意味でこれから人類生態学がチャレンジすべき課題はそこら中にころがっているように感じます. こういう問題群に解答を出すことによって,人類生態学をやっているということが,生理学や公衆衛生学をやっている, というのと同程度とはいかなくとも,すんなり理解されるようにしたい,と思っています.最後に, こういった学問領域に興味をよせてくれる若い人には,関心は広く,しかしspecificであることが重要だということを 強調しておきたいと思います.
